If you ask lawyers about client intake, almost all will focus on two things: checking/clearing conflicts and being able to open a matter to put time to it. Obviously these are essential components within business intake, however more advanced firms look to this function as a key entry gate for information that serve all areas of the firm. Ensuring you have the right amount of foundational data to not only understand you client base but also allow proper business planning and performance measurement is a must for law firms wanting to gain better control and confidence. Through intake, business processes should be looked at from a cross-functional perspective with specific attention to financial and relationship/marketing needs. Whether its establishment of key contacts, identification of client/matter attributes, risk profile, financial details, or anything else the intake process when used correctly can put a firm in a far better position to understand itself and its client base.
